PHENIX Muon Arm: newly
installed for Spin Physics

Welcome to our home page.  The Radiation Laboratory is one of the eldest research group in RIKEN. We have started a new experiment using polarized proton collision at RHIC, the RHIC Spin Project at BNL, USA.

*Press Release of the first collisions of polarized protons (Japan, USA)

Our Activities
How the spin of proton is formed with 3 quarks and gluons? This is a very fundament question in QCD, Quantum Chromodynamic. The RHIC Spin Project has bean established to solve this problem by colliding two polarized protons for the first time in history, and extended the physics capability of RHIC, Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory, BNL. At RHIC QGP, Quark Gluon Plasma, will be created by colliding two gold nuclei, through which we can study the state of early Universe just after the Big Bang. RIKEN Brookhaven Research Center, RBRC, was founded to carry out these research programs.

Theory
Collisions of polarized protons and heavy ions are measured with PHENIX detector at RHIC. Research program is organized in PHENIX Spin Physics Working Group. Our activity at BNL can be find here.   Analysis of the PHENIX data is performed at CCJ with over 300 CPUs with 100 TB storage. This CPU farm serves as the major simulation center for PHENIX and the analysis center for domestic collaborators. Our domestic activity is carried out using RIKEN Accelerator Research Facility (RARF), studying the properties of nuclear isotopes far from the stable li‚Že, and their relations to astrophysics, another missing ring in the early Universe. Planning for the new RIB factory (RIBF) is on going.  Recently a theory group is formed in Radiation Laboratory to study theoretical aspects of physics at RHIC. The group is conducted by K. Yazaki and T. Matsui, keeping close relation to the theoretical group in RBRC
Collaboration with accelerator group, theorists,  and other RHIC experiments is the key for the success of the program. The RBRC experimental group is conducting RSC, Rhic Spin Collaboration.   To enhance physics capability of PHENIX even further, PHENIX Detector Upgrade R&D is on going through the collaboration with BNL instrumentation division, CERN-ALICE and CERN-NA60. While RHIC creates nuclear matter with high temperature, study of dense nuclear matter is being performed at KEK using 12GeV Proton Cyclotron, by measuring the decays of vector mesons in nucleus. To miximize the impact from the RHIC spin project, We are compiling and modeling the world-wide data of the nucleon structure functions; Asymmetry Analysis Collaboration.
